Your go-to guide for making donations of unwanted items.

De-cluttering is not fun, and that’s an understatement. Yet there are moments in life when we all find ourselves overwhelmed with “too much stuff.” When this happens, donation can be a great solution to give new life to unused items and clear out some space.

But how and where can you do this?

Here’s our handy guide to donations.

Books

Consider donating to Better World Books or Books For Africa, organizations which provide books to those in need. Check their websites first to find out what kinds of books they accept. Operation Paperback is another great organization that sends books to military families and veterans.

Electronics

Amazon’s trade-in program issues gift cards in exchange for eligible devices. If yours doesn’t qualify, check out the recycling programs offered by Best Buy or Staples.

Furniture

To donate gently used furniture, check out:

● Freecycle, a forum in which people can give away a variety of free items
● the Salvation Army for their resale shop
● Donation Town, a database where you can search for local charities that will come pick up items

Clothing, Shoes and Accessories

You can donate good-quality, professional clothing to Jail To Jobs or Dress for Success. Just make sure it’s in good condition with no rips or stains.

Vehicles

Donate your unwanted RV, car or boat to one of the following organizations:

● Habitat For Humanity Cars For Homes
● the Salvation Army
● the American Diabetes Association
● Purple Heart
● A local high school or technical school, for use in their auto mechanic classes

Tip: Sort Through It First

You might be tempted to toss all your clothing or old electronics into one big pile to take to the donation center, but not so fast. First, spend some time sorting through the mess. Make sure that any clothing you want to donate is clean and in good condition. If a clothing item is too stained or ripped to donate, rip it up to use as a household cleaning cloth or send it out for textile recycling.

If you need help with removing unused items, don’t hesitate to reach out to JunkCo in Albuquerque. We can guide you in finding the best way to get rid of all the clutter and put it to work for a good cause.
