The patriotic holidays of the summer months are a wonderful opportunity to display Old Glory in your front yard. But if you’ve used the same flag for a number of years, it may be looking worn and tattered.
So what should you do?
When To Dispose of Your Flag
If your flag is looking a bit worse for wear, it’s time to dispose of it.
The U.S. Flag Code states: “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” In 1976, the code was amended to say that an American flag should be considered a living entity, with the right to expire with dignity.
Burning the Flag
According to the U.S. Flag Code, the preferred method to dispose of it is by holding a flag burning ceremony. But proceed with caution when burning your flag. You’ll need to check local ordinances, as well as the material it’s made of. Certain materials may release toxic fumes when burned.
If you decide to burn it, it’s important to fold it properly first so that it doesn’t touch the ground in the process.
Donating the Flag For a Retirement Ceremony
The American Legion holds regular flag burning ceremonies where they safely and respectfully burn worn-out flags. Contact a member of the American Legion to find out how you can donate your flag for this.
Burying Your Flag
Retiring the flag by burying it is a good option if you can’t safely burn it. Simply fold the flag in the traditional way and then bury it in a strong wooden box several feet in the ground. Just as you would when burning it, be sure to handle the flag respectfully in the process.
Of course, the most important thing to remember is that your American flag should never be placed in the trash.
